For decades the general advice around weight loss has been to eat less and exercise more. But as most people who have followed this advice can tell you, this doesn’t always lead to long-term results, and it can be very difficult to maintain a lifestyle that will continue to give you the results you want.

Enter GLP-1s. Weight-loss medications have been the missing piece many people needed to see real results and establish healthy habits long term. Zepbound® is one of the newest GLP-1s on the market, already helping many lose weight and improve their metabolic health.

What is Zepbound®?

Zepbound® is an injectable weight-loss medication developed by Eli Lilly. You may have also heard of Mounjaro®, which contains the same active ingredient (tirzepatide). However, it has only been approved for treating type 2 diabetes, while Zepbound® is approved specifically for weight loss (more on that below).

Zepbound® belongs to a class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications work by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone our bodies naturally produce to help regulate appetite and slow down digestion.

Unlike other GLP-1 agonists, however, Zepbound® mimics two hormones, not one. The other hormone is GIP, another hormone involved in appetite control and blood sugar regulation. This dual action sets Zepbound® apart from other GLP-1 medications.

How Zepbound® works in the body

Your body already produces GLP-1 and GIP after you eat. They help regulate appetite, slow digestion, and control how your body processes sugar, all of which can help with weight loss.

Zepbound® mimics both of these hormones, giving your body extra support with appetite and blood sugar regulation. Here’s what this can mean for you:

  • Reduced hunger and cravings. Many people report fewer cravings and decreased appetite once they start taking Zepbound®, helping them take back control over what they eat, how much, and when.
  • Helps you feel full for longer. Hunger is perhaps the biggest enemy of weight loss. GLP-1s like Zepbound® can help you vanquish it.
  • Slows digestion so your blood sugar doesn’t spike as much.
  • Steadier glucose levels. GLP-1 and GIP help regulate blood sugar so you have steadier levels—and steadier energy—throughout the day.

Over time, these effects typically lead to reduced calorie intake—and therefore weight loss. Zepbound® works best when paired with a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise, but a strict, restrictive diet—including many fad diets that have dominated the wellness industry for years—won’t be needed for success.

GLP-1s like Zepbound® work with your body’s natural hunger hormones, not against them, to make it easier to not only make better food choices, but to get actual results from your efforts.

Approved uses for Zepbound®

Zepbound® is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight who have at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol.*

Zepbound® is a prescription medication and is prescribed only after consultation with a licensed healthcare provider to determine appropriateness. If you want to see if you qualify, fill out this quick form and a provider will evaluate your needs, goals, and health history. No appointment needed!

Potential benefits of Zepbound®

Zepbound’s effectiveness has been backed by multiple clinical trials. When paired with a healthy diet and exercise, study participants lost an average of up to 20% of their body weight.*

Other benefits aside from weight loss may include metabolic health improvements, cardiovascular health benefits, and improved sleep in those who have sleep apnea.

Risks and side effects of Zepbound®

Most medications carry some risks and side effects, and Zepbound® is no different. Zepbound® side effects are primarily gastrointestinal, but can include any of the following:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

These side effects are typically dose related and tend to ease with time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Zepbound® is not recommended for patients with personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid weight-loss medications as well. Your provider will evaluate your medical history and goals before recommending the best treatment plan and medication for you.

How to take Zepbound®

Zepbound® comes as a once-weekly injection, which is administered in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. While the injection site is largely up to the patient, it’s a good idea to rotate injection sites regularly to ensure consistent results.

Most people start at a low dose and gradually increase their dose over several months until they’ve reached the highest dose amount they’re comfortable with. Once they hit their maintenance dose, they will stay at that dose amount for the duration of their treatment.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when taking Zepbound®:

  • Inject on the same day each week, at the same time. This makes it easier to develop the habit and you’ll be less likely to miss a dose.
  • Don’t double up if you miss a dose. If you aren’t able to take a dose at your normal time, take it as soon as you can. If you’re closer to your next dose than the one you missed, skip it and take your next dose as scheduled. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.

Lifestyle habits that can boost Zepbound® results

You may have heard about dramatic weight-loss results from GLP-1 medications, but Zepbound® isn’t meant to be a quick fix or a magic bullet. In fact, those who make lifestyle changes alongside the medication typically see better results—and are more likely to maintain weight loss long term.

If you’re not already following these best practices, the following habits can help maximize results and minimize side effects:

  • Eat more protein. Everyone’s protein needs are a little different, but if you’re making an effort to include protein in all of your meals and snacks, you will be in good shape.
  • Drink lots of water. While uncommon, dehydration can happen while taking Zepbound® due to changes in appetite and digestion. Drink more water than you’re used to to ensure your body is getting what it needs to function properly. (This can also help mitigate side effects.)
  • Stay active. Move throughout the day and work out regularly, incorporating both cardio and strength-training exercises. Strength training is especially important for those on a GLP-1, as weight loss can cause muscle loss.
  • Sleep 7–9 hours per night. Poor sleep can put your hunger hormones out of whack, leading to late-night snacking that can stall your progress.
  • Eat a nutritious diet. Most people eat less when they’re on a weight-loss medication like Zepbound®, so it’s more important than ever to make sure the nutrients you are consuming are the ones your body needs. Focus on foods high in fiber, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, and avoid ultra-processed foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients.

FAQs about Zepbound®

Is Zepbound® the same as Mounjaro®?

No. Both contain the same active ingredient (tirzepatide), but are FDA-approved for different uses. Mounjaro® is approved for type 2 diabetes treatment, while Zepbound® is approved specifically for weight management.

How long does it take to see results on Zepbound®?

Most people start to notice appetite changes early on (within the first few weeks), but visible weight loss usually takes a little longer, typically after a month or two, depending on lifestyle and dosage.

What foods should I avoid while taking Zepbound®?

There are no strict food restrictions, but high-fat, greasy, and sugary foods can make side effects worse. Focus on lean protein, vegetables, and whole grains as much as you can.

Can I drink alcohol while on Zepbound®?

Moderate alcohol is usually fine for non-diabetic patients, but those on glucose-lowering medicines should be cautious.

What happens if I miss a Zepbound® dose?

If it’s only been a few days since your scheduled dose, take it as soon as you can and then take your next dose on your normal day. If it’s been more than four days since your missed dose, skip it and take your next dose as scheduled—don’t double up.

Is Zepbound® covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage varies widely. Check with your insurance provider and ask about weight-management medication benefits. Shed also offers affordable GLP-1 medications without insurance.
