A study of early users of the Wegovy® pill showed meaningful weight loss among most participants, according to the company that produces the pill, Novo Nordisk. The Wegovy pill was FDA-approved for weight management in December 2025, providing a GLP-1 option for those wanting to avoid the more traditional injections.
About the phase 3 OASIS 4 trial
OASIS 4 was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of the Wegovy pill (25 mg) in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, without type 2 diabetes. Participants received either the Wegovy pill or a placebo each day for 64 weeks.
The safety and tolerability for the Wegovy pill was similar to that observed for semaglutide. The most common side effects were gastrointestinal, with most cases being mild or moderate and diminishing over time.
The study was sponsored by Novo Nordisk.
Study findings
- 1 in 3 participants achieved average weight loss of 13.2% after 16 weeks and weight loss of 21.6% at the end of the trial (64 weeks).
- Those who didn’t meet the “early response” criteria still went on to achieve 11.5% weight loss by the end of the trial.
- 8 in 10 participants with poor physical function almost doubled their ability to move, including bending over, standing comfortably, and staying active, compared to those who took the placebo.

What this means for GLP-1 users
“The evidence base supporting the benefits of the Wegovy pill continues to grow,” said Martin Holst Lange, chief scientific officer and executive vice president of research and development at Novo Nordisk.
And he’s not just talking about weight loss. “The data now underscores the meaningful improvements people can see in their day-to-day lives. Things many may take for granted, like the ability to stand for a length of time or simply bending down, can all be impacted by excess weight.”
GLP-1 injections have led the way in transforming how weight loss is treated. Early success with the Wegovy pill will impact weight management further by giving people more options.
