Dealing with social judgment when you're on a GLP-1

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room when it comes to GLP-1 medications—the judgment. For some reason, there's a deep-rooted idea that the only "right" way to lose weight is through sheer willpower—hitting the gym, eating kale, and resisting every carb in sight. So when someone uses medication to help manage their weight, it’s often seen as “cheating” or “taking the easy way out.”

But is it really that simple?

Why is there a stigma around GLP-1’s?

Shortages sparked outrage

When GLP-1 medications first skyrocketed in popularity, demand quickly outpaced supply and pharmacies struggled to keep up. That meant some people with diabetes, who depended on these drugs to manage their blood sugar, suddenly couldn’t access the medications they needed. Understandably, this sparked a lot of public frustration and raised a difficult question: who should get priority when a medication serves multiple purposes? It also fueled a wave of judgment toward those using GLP-1s for weight loss, painting them as the reason others were going without, even though both uses are medically valid.

The “weight loss is all about discipline” myth

There’s this long-standing idea that weight loss should be all about discipline—think strict diets, grueling workouts, and resisting every craving. So when someone uses medication to help with weight, people start whispering about shortcuts or cheating.

Fatphobia in disguise

Here’s where things get even messier. There's a lot of stigma around being overweight, but also judgment toward people who do something about it—especially if that “something” is medication. It’s a lose-lose scenario for a lot of people that exposes a deeper discomfort society has with bodies that don’t fit a certain mold.

The vanity narrative

Much of the media coverage has focused on celebrities using GLP-1s for cosmetic reasons, painting them as the newest “quick fix” for looking red-carpet ready. That kind of coverage feeds the idea that these medications are just about aesthetics, which completely misses the point.

Medications like Mounjaro® and Ozempic® may be used to treat serious health conditions, like type 2 diabetes and obesity, which can have life-threatening consequences if left untreated.

Fear and confusion

GLP-1s have been hit with a ton of misinformation and over-the-top headlines. Every rare side effect gets turned into a full-on panic story—it’s easy to see why people get spooked and judge people for taking them.

Strategies for handling GLP-1 judgment

  • Framing: Remind yourself that you're making a personal health decision, not seeking anyone's approval. Whether it's managing diabetes, addressing obesity, or improving your quality of life, your reasons are valid.
  • Setting boundaries: You don’t owe anyone a detailed explanation. A simple “I’m working with my doctor on a treatment plan that’s right for me” is more than enough.
  • Reclaiming the narrative: If you do choose to engage, calmly mention that GLP-1s (like Ozempic® and Mounjaro®) are medically backed for treating serious health conditions. A little education can go a long way, especially if someone’s just misinformed.
  • Choose your support system: Surround yourself with supportive voices—whether it’s friends, online communities, or healthcare professionals, you deserve encouragement, not judgment.

And remind yourself…

  • You’re not cheating—you’re choosing a tool that supports your long-term health!
  • Real effort is involved (habit changes, dealing with side effects, and consistency).
  • You deserve to feel good about your body and wellness journey!

You are not alone on this journey

Starting GLP-1 medications often comes with big changes—not just physically, but emotionally, too. These medications can affect appetite, digestion, energy levels, and even how you relate to your body. It’s a lot to process, and having a supportive community or professional guidance can make the experience feel less overwhelming. Knowing you're not alone and hearing from others going through similar experiences can help normalize the ups and downs that sometimes come with it. Shed’s Coaching Program can provide you with support and guidance along the way.

Support also plays a huge role in staying on track. Whether it’s checking in with your doctor, talking to a therapist, or connecting with peers in a support group, accountability and encouragement can help you stick with the process, troubleshoot side effects, and celebrate even the smallest victories. Having a safe space to ask questions, share your journey, and speak openly without fear of judgment is crucial because this isn’t just a physical journey—it’s a mental and emotional one, too.

At the end of the day…

Obesity is a complex medical condition, not a personal failure. Choosing to use treatments like GLP-1s isn’t about taking the “easy way out.” It’s about taking your health seriously and using the tools available to support lasting change.

As more people speak up and share their stories, the conversation can be reshaped with more empathy, understanding, and respect. Your health journey is valid, your progress is real, and no one gets to define it but you—you’ve got this!
